“Son of a Preach” is based on a true story about a preacher's son turned opioid-addicted magician who thinks he's outwitted his habit. Strap yourself in for this rollercoaster ride as we take you on an incredible journey into the life of Raymond Broadwater, a true master of illusions and sleight-of-hand.

We first meet Raymond as an innocent preacher’s son. However, when his father passes away from leukemia, Raymond runs far away from the church and falls into heroin addiction. 

During his teens, Raymond discovers a book on sleight-of-hand, and he becomes obsessed with learning magic. It doesn’t take long for Raymond to realize that making things disappear can be very lucrative. His demanding vice is quite expensive, leading Raymond to begin performing street shows in New York City, so he can steal the wallets and jewelry from his unsuspecting audience.

The better Raymond gets at the art of deception, the more he deceives himself into thinking that he is above opioids and has it under control. His sister, Cynthia, whom he calls “Kid” tries to be a refuge and voice of reason for Raymond, but he believes he’s done too much wrong to be a good guy. The street shows get bigger, and so does the amount of drugs poured into the spoon. Raymond begins to forget “the turn” and “prestige” in his magic tricks — causing audience members to walk away mid-performance.

Raymond’s sprial spins lower, when he awakens in the hospital after an overdose. But, he keeps performing. He’s almost saved up enough money to buy his childhood home back when a drug bust ends with an extended stay at Rikers Island. Cynthia picks him up on release day to live with her. Raymond attempts to integrate into Cynthia’s routine but the brown liquid whispers his name every morning. Cynthia wishes she could do more, but is in her own battle as she is tethered to an abusive husband named Charles. 

Raymond moves back to New York and things get worse after Raymond gets jumped by a neighborhood gang. Raymond regains consciousness and calls Cynthia. She asks him to move back in with her. Raymond happily agrees – vowing to turn his life around. While on the road to Cynthia’s home, Raymond fatefully runs into Charles, and makes him pay for the years he abused Cynthia by snapping his wrist.

Raymond begins his road to recovery in Little Rock, Arkansas. Soon after detoxing, he’s back on his feet in New York – only now, with a desire for health and a passion for portrait photography. Cynthia finds a good husband and Raymond is a new man – walking a path of peace and sobriety. Cynthia and Raymond reunite in Arkansas, and their life goes on as it started – with love and support for each other, no matter what.
